Friday, January 2, 2015 - The News - Page 3 The News Staff Reports The Athens Hornets lost 73-65 to the Canton Eagles Dec. 22 in Canton. ranking the team 5-6 overall. Eagles player Zach Hobbs opened the game with a 3-pointer and Jack- son Malone made two bas- kets. The Hornets continued to trail in the first half but took the lead halfway through the second quarter. Kynden Crist passed to Miles Koehler for a 3- pointer stinging the Eagles fbr a 23-21 lead. Crist stole a pass from Canton increasing the lead, 25-21. He finished the game putting up 13 points in his first time on the court with the Hornets. At the butler ending the first half, Crist nailed a 3-pointer, ending the half, 34-31. The Eagles roared back m the third quarter out- scoring the Hornets 12-6, stealing the lead into the fourth quarter 49-47. With no time remaining Eagle Andrew Hamel assisted Logan Nace with a jumper. In the fourth quarter both teams traded the lead back and forth for a nail-biting finish. In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Eagle Tre' Fitzgerald scored a jumper with 3:28 remain- ing taking the lead 60-57. As the Eagles widened the lead, the Hornets fought hard to stay within four points, with Rashaan Miller sinking two free throws with 1:54 left on the clock. However, the Eagles stepped up sc0rmg and at the horn the final score was 73-65, Eagles win. Courtland Lyons led the Hornets with 16 points, Travor Fuller added 12 points and Koehler, 10. The Hornets play at Ca- yuga (today) Jan. 2 and in Mexia Tuesday, Jan. 6. The next home game versus Bullard is Friday, Jan. 9. The News Staff Reports ATHENS-The Athens Lady Hornets lost 57-32 to the Bullard Lady Pan- thers at Athens High School Dec. 19 after scor- ing only six points in the third quarter and giving 28 turnovers to the Pan- thers. The Hornets were held at bay in the last two and a half minutes of the first quarter. Down 11-2, Barket made a 3-point play with a jumper and free throw with 4:39 remaining. Lauren Zachary made a layup and hit four 3-point- ers in the first half. Johnson and Chilton made the last points of quarter with 3:30 remain- ing. Barker scored nine of the Hornet's 14 points in the second half and the team outscored Bullard 8- 4 in the fourth quarter af- ter trailing 47-22 in the last three minutes of third quarter play. Hornets senior Bryla Barker led the game with 20 points but Kelcee Johnson only finished with five points, Hadley Cain had three points and Asha Chilton and Raveon Rodriguez added two points each. The Lady Hornets de- feated Neches 59-13 Dec. 16 but are still 2-13 over- all. They play the Frankston Classic Dec. 29-30. The Lady Hornets host Kaufman for the start of district play Jan. 13.
