After four weeks of training camp,
four exhibition contests, a 16-week
regular season schedule and three ex-
citing weeks of playoffs the National
Football League will finally crown its
champion Sunday in New Orleans.
In New Orleans? Yes, but put your
eyes back in your head and get back in-
to your chair for the Saints have not
been proclaimed the champs. New
Orleans, the Superdome to be more
specific, is the site of this year's Super
Bowl.
The participants for this year's affair
are teams that were picked to be
playoff contenders, but were not expec-
ted to still be playing in January. In one
corner you have a team that dislikes the
city it plays in and wants to move to Los
Angeles, the Oakland Raiders. In the
other is the Philadelphia "We made the
Cowboys wear blue and won" Eagles.
While reaching the Super Bowl and
winning is every team's ultimate goal
when a season begins, there's really an
anti-climatic feeling after the playoffs.
Let's face it, after three weeks of sud-
den death the Super Bowl loses some of
its drama.
You see, the Super Bowl is more than
a football game; it's an event, a hap-
pening. It's when all of your movie
stars, television celebrities, politicians,
etc., come crawling out of the wood-
work to be seen attending the "Big
One". Heck, the Super Bowls are even
numbered in roman numerals. Oh yea,
this year's game is number XV.
Teams making the "bowl of all
bowls" have a lot more than just their
opponent to overcome. There's the car-
nival-type atmosphere, being overun by
the news media for interviews, just to
name a couple. The team that's able to
handle all of the pomp and circumstan-
ce and makes it to the game in a half-
way decent frame of mind usually wins.
As for this year's participants,
Philadelphia is making its first ap-
pearance, while Oakland has been in
this spot twice before. Although the
Raiders last appearance was in 1977,
when they beat Minnesota, this year's
club is vastly different, personnel-wise.
As for the game and who's going to
win, professional oddsmakers are
making the Eagles an anywhere from
two-to-four point favorite. We took that
question to the MHS coaching staff and
found that for the most part they agree.
llere's their views andpredictions.
Plill, TRICE
The Tiger mentor, who should know
something about defensive football as
his gridsters lived by it during this past
season, says that defense will be the
determining factor. "Philadelphia's
defense will be the key for their suc-
cess. Both offenses rate about the
same. Philadelphia 27-Oakland 24,"
