The Upper Neches River Municipal Water Authority fathered this lake, with an or- iginal surface acreage of 6,000 feet in Anderson, Smith and ttenderson Counties, It was constructed for water supply and recreation, and according to Texas Parks & Wildlife game wardens, a pretty good chunk of Texas anglers are absorbing the recreation phase with enthusia.~m. East Texas has a few species of fish that are not commonly found in West Texas, and it's always a surprise to an ang- ler and a delight to a native East Texan to see a fisherman pull one of them out of the wa- ter. Black Crappie are rela- tively numerous in Lake Pal- estine, as well as the Bowfin (grindle, grinnell, mud fish, etc.) and a few stories about paAdlefish are still alive by a few who tangled with one of the not-too-plentiful species. Alligators? Yep, a few. Access to the lake is first available through a boat safe- ty inspection and licensing sta- tion near the dam on the west side of the lake.
