QUESTION - How many youngsters
in the United States are children of
alcoholics?
a) 1 million
b) 5 million
c) 10 million
d) 20 million
ANSWER - According to Robert
Ackerman, prominent sociologist and
author of the book, Children of
Alcoholics, "There are an estimated 27
million children of alcoholics in the
United States, of which approximately
20 million are in their preadolescent or
adolescent years."
Based on the belief that 50 percent of
children of alcoholics become
alcoholics themselves, this means there
are about I0 million more alcoholics
coming down the road. This forecast
becomes even darker when coupled
'with the facts that children of alcoholics
who themselves become alcoholic
usually do so in their late 20's and early
30's, and that 60 percent of child abuse
cases involve excessive drinking.
Correct answer - d.
