A Malakoff resident since he was a student in elemen- tary school, Surls is a former school trustee, having served one term in the past. He is married to the former Mickey Ferguson and the couple has four children in the Malakoff school system. These include Phillip and Palge in the third grade, Shayne in the first grade and Shelly in the sixth grade. "I'm not running against any particular person," Surls said. "In fact, 1 think the voters have the ffest selection of candidates thay have ever had. i think the voters are fortunate to have as much interest as there is." "I'm not running with any particular ax to grind, and I am not critical of the way things are run in the district," he said. "I don't make any promises except to do my best. I just want whatever is best for our school children and the taxpayers of the district." Suds said that he does not represent any special interest group, but is primarily interested in the education of children of the district receive. Surls received his educa- tion in the Malakoff school system and is a graduage ot Texas A&M. Valuen Grayer Mayor's Post Lamesa Sillick formally announced this week her candidacy for Mayor of Trinidad and solicited the votes of Trinidad citizens. Her statement follows: If elected I pledge to work in harmony with the City Council you have elected to represent you. There will be no unauthorized actions Watt A. Norman, Jr. nrnv00_r taken. All work will be planned by the Council and Watt Nman Jr. qwl j designated in advance. Runs For Trustee I am in favor of hiring one man capable of overseeing the systems of the city-- meter readings and repairs, street maintenance, hauling garbage. This action alone would save the city enough to pay the city's system superintendent. He could oversee all water and sewer lines to be laid, meet with the Council and receive instructions and report all actions to them. If I'm elected there will be a box placed in City Hall for any and all suggestions and complaints. They will be read and acted upon. Everyone will be welcome to all meetings, be recognized and invited to speak. Also I would like to have a reporter at each meeting and report our actions. Also an annual financial report will be published. Our city has some proposed ordinances that should be acted upon-- Dog ordinance, delapidated structure ordinance, and future building requirements ordinance. Financial management is of prime importance to us. Inflation has taken its toll on city operations and we must determine our needs and financial capabilities in a businesslike manner. I have lived in Trinidad 35 years, been in business, reared and educated my children here. I am interested in seeing our city grow that we might not have to leave town to do our shopping. Vote for a change on April 2. [Pol. Adv. Paid for by Lamesa Sillick, Trinidad] Valuen Grayer formally announced his candidacy for trustee of the Malakoff Indevendent School District this week. His statement follows: My name is Vaiuen Grayer. I have lived in Malakoff for the last 36 years. 1 work at Nipak &nd I am a supervisor in the nitrate warehouse. I am married to Ide Mae Grayer, and we have three children in the Malakoff school system. Deborah is a junior in high school. Dianna is a freshman in high school, and Dewayne is in the eighth grade in junior high school. As a tax-paying citizen, 1 feel that it is my obligation to be concerned about the community. 1 think the only way a person can show concern about the affairs of the community is by becoming a part of it and helping to promote the will and interests of the people of the community. I think serving on the school board is one of my ways of saying I care about the community. If elected I would like to help build a better school system for our children by trying to keep top quality teachers, trying to help regulate taxes and by trying to voice the sentiments of the people of the community at all times.
