(Staff Photo by Ann Rounsavall) 0~ O O Ry FRANK CHAPPELL SCIENCE NEWS EDITOR AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Alcohol is absorbed directly and fairly rapidly into the blood from the stomach an/i intestines. It is carried to the liver, then to the heart and distributed throughout the body's tissues. Most consumed alcohol is eventually metabolized (broken down by body processes) into carbon dioxide and water. A pamphlet from the American Medical Association points out that the rate of absorption varies among in- dividuals and varies in the same person at different times. It depends on the amount of alcohol in the drink, how fast it is consumed, and how quickly it leaves the stomach. Fasting or any other condition that causes rapid emptying of the stomach will bring about an increase in the ab- sorption rate. Anything that delays em- ptying of the stomach, such as the presence of solid food, will retard ab- sorption. An average 150-pound man, under or- dinary circumstances, can metabolize about seven grams of alcohol (the equivalent of about two thirds of an ounce of straight whiskey or eight oun- ces of beer) in an hour. But ir~vidual variation is reported to be as h, ~ as 50 percent more or less than the average. The more you drink beyond your ability to metabolize alcohol in a given period, the more intoxicated you become. The most disturbing effects of alcohol occur in the central nervous system, especially the brain. Judgment, memory and learning ability are all af- fected as intoxication increases. Coor- dination is imparted, as reflected, by unsteady gait, speech disturbances and reduced manual skill.. The drinker may feel little pain, or may be unconcerned about his safety. High concentrations of alcohol can lead to shock or death. Sustained exposure of brain tissue to alcohol utilimately can lead to destruc- tion of brain cells. Inadequate diet, so often associated wtih alcoholism, probably contributes to this process as well as to the degeneration of nerve tissue, Alcohol appears to constrict the ar- teries of the heart. Studies suggest that it can injure the heart muscle. Bible Correspondence Course QUESTION: Where did the ex- pression "A little bird told me" originate?
