Newcomers can still join the classes for the next two weeks, says Beth. The Swingers are also trying to organize a teen age group and are offering the same lessons to teen agers at half price, only $15 per couple for the 15 lessons. Many churches in Texas have sponsored teen age square dancing groups as a means of combatting juvenile delinquency. It is a recreation in which large groups can participate and let off steam and excess energy. "And those teen agers can really dance," says Beth. Don't think you have to be a perfect physical speciman to participate. It helps, but square dancing is not all that strenuous. Leon McGee, sec- retary of the Swingers, had two severe strokes several years ago from which he was not expected to recover. He did recover however, and never misses an opportunity to square dance. Another club member has had a heart attack and he claims square dancing is good exercise and just what the doctor ordered. Local square dancing is not the romping, stomping frenzy of the Grand Ole Opry. It is smooth, coordi- nated, and the steps resem- ble a fast shuffle. The Swingers promise you a good physical work out while you're having fun. Square dancing evolved from the old European court dances and was brought to America during colonial times. As the frontier expanded the square dance went west with the wagon trains and is now recognized as the true American folk dance. It has waxed and waned in popularity over the years, but is now a strong revival during the Bicen- tennial celebration. If you're still not con- vinced that square dancing is your thing, you can sit in on the dances without any commitment. Spectators are welcome and there is no charge. But when that coun- try western music fills the hall and the caller starts his singing and patter calls, you'll find your fingers tap- ping and your feet swinging in time to the music. And when you're prome- nading down the hall with your partner for the Grand March, don't say I didn't warn you! I I . New Holland Round Balers and Hay -Machinery Sales and Service. J. A.
