LlCl ARKANSAS CATHOLIC DIOCESE JANUARY 13,2001 PAGE 5 Parishoners help design Wall of Creation along with professional artists BY HOLLY BYRNE I~OGERS CORRESPONDENT ROGERS -- Like an old-fashioned barn- raising, parishioners of St. Vmcent de Paul Parish in Rogers are joining t gether to build Creation Park. The park will be a compli- ment to the church's future worship space. "My vision is a park that will build bridges between the Anglo and Hispanic communi- ty, between the school community and parish community and aiso between St. V'mcent de Paul and the neighboring corn- munity," said Susan Jasan, chairwoman and at-large parish representative. Building bridges of faith and community COmmenced when Msgr. Richard Oswald gave his blessing over the park project. A committee of 12 adults and 30 students rep- resenting St. Vincent's faith community ,began m research, design and budget a qual- Ity space for all ages to enjoy, share faith and build community. "We have representatives from all OUps," said Jasan. ' 'he Hispanic commu- ty has been very involved. Language has not been a barrier." ~A " " " , very vital part of this project is the chil- dren s committee," said Jasan. "A children's team, made up of parish public schoolchild- in Artist Rita Ward lends a hand to several little painters from Rogers who attended a family day at Terra Studios in Durham. ren and St. Vincent de Paul School children has been critical for deciding important ele- ments such as layout, components and selec- tions. The kids have operated at a very mature level." "Being a part of the park project voices the opinions of the children in the parish," said Jenny Parker, sixth grader at St. V'mcent de Paul School. "ff the adults did it all, they might not have the same ideas or know what the children wanted." "Creation Park is about our faith, not just playing," said Jasan. "We want to develop a park that will also allow children m express faith." Expression of children's faith will be evi- dent along the "Wall of Creation." Infants through high school seniors at St. Vincent de Paul painted a file to be included among the 1,032 files that will adorn the two-foot high wall. The wall is a backdrop m the strucm re and park area that will support a tree-lined walkway from the parking lot to the worship space. Inset among the tiles will be seven panels painted by St. Vincent de Paul parish artists, depicting the story of creation, with the seventh day panel ending at the worship centel: Terra Studios in Durhan) (Washingm n County) opened classes where artist Rita Ward taught tile painting technique m all parishioners and families. Ward also came m St. Vincent de Paul m teach weekend classes and encourage the creative spirit within. Before tile painting began, short prayer services were held. Children and adults read smiles of creation. "It was overwhelming m hear a child read one of the creation smiles and then hear the wisdom in the voice of a grandparent reading the next day of cre- ation," saidJasan. The park is also an evangelization tool. 'We are hoping people who use the space will see the children's expression of their Catholic faith,"Jasan said. The park is also a means of outreach to the community. When not in school use, it will be available to the community and to families visiting loved ones at nearby St. Mary Hospital. "I feel it is going m show the community what kids can do," said Jenny Parker. "I can come back when I am older and show my grandkids the tiles and show them that I made the community a better place by help- ing design this parE" i( !
