Q. I think my grandparents could
qualify for SSI payments because the
only income they have is a small social
security check. They are afraid they
would not qualify because of the assets
they own. Will their assets count again-
st them?
A. A couple may have resources
(assets) that count of up to $2,250 and be
eligible for SSI payments. Not all
resources count in determining
eligibility. The home a person lives in
and the land around it are not counted,
regardless of value. Personal effects or
household goods with an equity value of
$1,500 or less are not counted. Also, a
car may not count.
Q. A friend of mine and I each receive
SSI payments. We have decided to live
together so we can share household ex-
penses. Do we have to notify social
security of this change in our living
arrangements?
A. Yes, you must notify social
security if you begin living with others
and sharing the household expenses.

office that your claim be reviewed. This
request must be made within 6 months
of the date you receive the notice of the
original decision. If, after the review,
you still disagree with the decision, you
can ask for a hearing before a hearing
officer If the amount In question is $I00
or more. Again, a request for a hearing
must be made in writing within 6 man.
