Income before securities transactions for the quarter was ;1,='r ,O0O or $.7o per share, a S per- cent increase over the $.97 share earned in the first quarter of 1980. Included in the year earlier period was a gain of $.09 per share from the sale of an investment in an affiliated bank. Excluding this nonrecurring gain, operating income before securities transactions was up 21 per- cent. First Bancorp's profitability ratios continue to rank well above in- dustry norms. Return on average assets for the quarter was 1.42 percent and return on average shareholders' equity was 17.48 percent. First Bancorp further increased its allowance for loan losses and stregthened its capital position in the quarter. At March 31 the valuation allowance for lean losses was 1.4 per- cent of leans and shareholders' equity was 7.38 percent of total assets - both conservative ratios and sources of strength. The acquisition by First Bancorp of 54 percent of the outstanding common stock of First Greenville Banoshares, Inc., Greenville, Texas was completed as of the close of busineml on March 31, 1981. This provided the inclusion of Barn=hares' subsidiary First Green- ville National Bank in First Bancorp's March 32, 1971 consolidated balance sheet.
