However, following grand jury deliberations Henderson County Sheriff's Office chief investigator Jim B/'ewer said he was convinced of her involvement but needed additional evidence to complete the case. The bodies of the Cherrys were discovered in their Trinidad home of 23 years while area fireflghters fought an early morning blaze Oct. 30, 1962 which destroyed the house. Autopsies by Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences determined the couple bad died of stab wounds prior to the fire. Speculation has been that the fire was an attempt to cover up the actual cause of death. Cherry, a 66-year-old retired Enserch employee was found in one of the three bedrooms at about 9 a.m. following the discovery in a smoldering hallway six hours earlier of his 73-year-old wife. Their modest frame home was about one mile from Trinidad's central business district. Making the Friday arrest were Athens-based Texas Ranger H. B. "Slick" Alfred, HCSO chief deputy Mauriene Pagitt, Trinidad police chief Kenneth Carter and Fort Worth of- ricers. "We picked her up at her place of employment," said Pagitt. "There was no resistance." Immediately following the Cherrys' deaths Henderson County Sheriff Cbarlie Fields put priority on finding "who last saw Mr. or Mrs. Cherry." In commenting after the March grand jury hearing, Brewer said others near the couple's home shortly before the midnight blaze had been suspeonaed to testify.
