These very capable seventh graders or 12-year-olds took the college- level SAT as participants in Duke's Talent Identification Program (TIP). "TIP was initiated in 1980 to identify bright young students, to help develop their special abilities, and to direct them toward special academic programs for the gifted and talented. The 1983 Talent Search involved more than 23,000 students and covered 16 of the southern, southwestern and mid- western United States and is the largest search of its type in the country," said Dr. Robert Sawyer, Director of the Program. The 728 students invited to the Texas Awards Ceremony had to score at least ~50 out of 800 points on the mathematics portion of the SAT (500 for boys), or 430 out of 800 points on the verbal portion, Or 52 out of 60 points on the Test of Stan- dard Written English. All participants received certificates of merit in recognition of their achievement and the very highest scorers also received scholarships and book awards. COX In dismissing grand jurors Friday following their day-long session, Third District Judge Wayne Lawrence spoke of recently sentencing a twice con- victed murderer to a second life-tetTn imprisonment. "Last week former Texas Depart- ment of Corrections (TDC) director George Berg told the Palestine Rotary Club the criminal justice system in Texas had broken down," Judge Lawrence said. "I doubt very seriously a man I just sentenced to life in Houston County would agree with Beto's statement." The judge referred to Kaul C. Mar- tin,z, 40, convicted in the Aug. 17, 1982 killing of fellow Eastham Prison Unit inmate Michael L. Hamilton, 24. District attorney Richard Handorf prosecuted the case which resulted in Lawrence stacking
