. llltWB:' ,) PAGE 6A - The Malakoff News - Wednesday, Religion June 13. 2001 Reflections I By Dr. James White I DO YOU HAVE TIE JOY OF CHRIST? "And now come unto thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might h ae my joy fulfilled in thela." John 17:13 KJV It What characterizes your life? What is the one thing that people can point out to others about you that speaks of you as a person in every respect? Is it y)ur physical looks? Is it yl[ur personality? Is it your s- cial status within the com- munity? Is it your financial$ status? Is it your outstand- ing abilities? Is it your qual- ity of life? Can it be the same characteristic that Jesus Christ possessed? If so, it is the joy of • Christ. Many times Jesus spoke to His disciples about His joy being complete and full in them. His desire and goals for us, His twenty first century disciples, is the same as it was with his first century disciples. His dis- ciples were filled with joy as they realized who they were: children of God and joint heirs with Christ. (Ro- marts 8:16-17). His dis- ciples have been dead in their sins but were now made alive in Christ (Ro- ma 6:4). As disciples we had once been helpless vic- tims of death, but now death has no hold over us (1 Corinthians 15:55-58). His disciples experience great joy by just hearing His words (Matthew 13:20). The disciples had joy as they left the sepul- chre because it was empty (Matthew 28:8). We can be like His first century dis- ciples because they had joy in finding the kingdom of heaven in Christ (Matthew 13:44). Joy is seen over one person that sincerely repents over their sins (Luke 15:7). Also, Jesus wants His joy to remain in us in order that our joy might be full (John 15:11). Lastly, Jesus wants our joy to be full so He told us to ask the Father in His name and we shall receive "that your joy may be full (John 16:24). How can we be anything less than joyful in Christ since we have had such a marvelous salvation experience with Christ. Christ's joy: do not deny yourself His joy which is our birthright as a child of God. Never be satisfied with a joyless life. Each os us as believers ought to have a deep settles fullness of the joy of Christ that no circumstances nor situa- tions in life can dispel. How does this come to us? This comes as each of us allows the Holy Spirit to express Himself in our life each day. You will notice it as will oth- ers. In Galatians 5:22, one of the fruits of the Spirit is joy. This joy is totally dif- ferent and unlike any hap- piness that is produced by the world in which we live. Happiness comes about due to our circumstances and situations. Joy comes from within and is due to our relationship and fellow- ship with the Lord through His Holy Spirit. Unforgiven sin blocks out the possibili- ties of having the joy of this fellowship which enhances our relationship. This type of joy should fill us and permeate everything we do. It is interesting to note that Jesus never did pray First Assembly of God Church 906.,..goyl Bvd. • M:,-*-I/ ........... :-* 489-0188 -- , 210 S. In John 17, Jesus prayed that you and I wouldhave the same joy that the Father had given Him. This was and is a di- vine joy, a joy that comes from a deep and unwaver- ing relationship with the God the Father. Our joy is so firmly grounded in our relationship and our fellowship with the Lord that nothing on earth can ever challenge or shake it. Are you experiencing real joy or just happiness? Is your joy the joy of Christ? I Bits From Baker.y God would never lie to you; but He will let you be- lieve a lie. He didn't lie to Adam and Eve; but they believed Satan's lies about God. You can believe any- thing you want and do what ever you want. God will tell you you are believ- ing and doing the wrong things; but He won't stop you. In Romans 1:24, 26 and 28 we see that God told these people the truth and to do what was right; but they rejected Jesus! All of Jesus' "word and sayings" are found throughout the Bible. How would a person kriow they are rejecting Jesus, His "sayings" and His "Word"? You reject i Church of Christ • Mabank Fifth St. & Mt. Vernon 887-0311 Church of Christ • Eustace 316 W. And just like Adam and Eve, God will allow you to believe and do what you want to believe and do. 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 says "for this reason God will send upon them a de- luding influence so that they might believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness." Are you believing Jesus' "sayings and word" or Satan's lis about Jesus' "sayings and word"? What if the Lord were to come right now? Would you know for sure, noth- ing doubting, that you would go to heaven? Don't know? Can't decide? I'd like to help! Write to Gene Baker at P.O. Box 395, Malakoff, Texas 75148- 0395. Or e-mail me at Hope to see you in church on Sunday ! Back to the Bible Philip entreats Nathanael to go with him to follow Jesus, who is leaving for Galilee. Mentioning that Jesus is from Nazareth, Nathanael exclaims, Narth!, Can anything good come from there? Come and see, says Philip• Apparently Nazareth has an unsavory reputation. It would seem unlikely to any devout Jew that a spiritual leader could arise from such a place.
