Whether you're backpacking across
the Rockies or enjoying a lemonade in
your backyard, nothing can make the
outdoors more unpleasant than biting,
bothersome insects.
"Mosquitoes, chiggers, ticks and
biting flies will bite any area of exposed
skin, no matter how small, just about
any time," says Tom Tuttle of the
Johnson Wax Biology Center,
manufacturers of OFF! insect
repellents.
"But it is possible to enjoy the out-
doors without being 'bugged to death.'
The secret is to take the bite out of you
by using personal insect repellents
effectively and by knowing other ways
of protecting yourself as well."
Mosquitoes and biting flies seem to be
attracted by bright and dark colors,
body warmth, perspiration and scented
materials. Tuttle advises wearing light-
colored clothing like khaki and avoiding
dark colors, plaids and checks.
Expose as little skin as possible by
donning long-sleeved shirts and long
pants, especially in wooded areas.

Q. I have been getting disability
benefits for overs year because of in- of

juries I received in an auto accident.
My condition has improved and I hope
to start working soon. When do I report
this and when would my disability
benefits stop?
A. Improvement in your condition or
a return to work should be reported
immediately. If a return to work is
possible because of medical im-
provement, a disability may be ter-
minated at that time. Disability
payments would be made for three
more months• If there is no medical
improvement when a person returns to
work, there is nine-month trial work

noying insects.
- Get personal! Apply personal
repellent to all exposed skin and
clothing. Complete coverage is
essential. A hungry insect will quickly
discover any unprotected spots. The
scent of grooming aids (hair sprays,
perfume, colognes and after shave)
many also serve to attract mosquitoes
and certain types of biting flies.
- Touch-ups are a must. fteapply
repellents as needed. Two to three
hours is the normal staying power for
most products. Repellents will lose
their effectiveness because of normal
body movement, perspiration and
swimming. When insects start to land,
even if they don't bite, that's the time to
reapply.
Have protection, will travel.
Repellent protection is portable.
Personal repellents are applied directly
to exposed skin and clothing so you
literally wear the protection. As you
move from place to place, the
protection travels with you. Repellents
are available in three portable forms:
