It is either superlative or dull. When superlative, it is large scaled, well-balanced and formal in appearance, made of handsomely figured mahogany and decorated with meticulously designed and executed bronze mounts. When dull or ordinary, it is large scaled, heavy, made without distinction in the wood grain and if decorated, with crude undistinguished metal-work. As the various revolution- ary factions formed govern- ments, it was decreed, from the beginning, that the decorative arts must not imitate the court or the hated aristrocracy. Guilds were abolished, and along with them the identifying stamps of the maitres. All the delicate and frivolous symbols of luxury and privilege were to be eliminated. Simplicity and geometric severity were sought, but classic details such as molded edges, fluting and pleasantly tapered legs were retained in the earliest significant expression, the Directoire style. Also there was an almost military smartness coupled with martial emblems and other traditional Roman details. So the neoclassicism that sprang up with the unearthing of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the mid-18th century continued. Lictore's fasces, signifying strength through union, and Phrygian caps, liberty, along with the purely decorative anthemions, laurel, acanthus and egg and dart motifs, were mingled with creatures of mythology such as the gods, Apollo, Mercury, Mars, and fantastic animals, griffins, chimeras, sphinxes, winged lions. The bronze mounts were treated quite differently in that they formed borders or were spaced carefully as golden silhouettes on utterly plain surfaces. In the short 15 year span from the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789 to FARMERS000000e.SUPPLy & RANCHERS Call Collect 214-396-2881 or 396-2282 CUSTOM FERTILIZER SPREADING Kenneth Lewis West Hwy. 31 Owner Kerens, Texas i L By Lu Ten Napel the peak of Napoleon's career in 1804, furniture design, changed drastically while progressing logically. The greatest variety was seen p the chairs. Some had the curule form or curving X-shaped legs, and others were thronelike, with full sculptured figures as front legs or arm supports. These went from replicas of Greek caryatids to full-blown winged lions orsphinxes. This was also a time when extremely elaborate and detailed small sculptures of allegorical and mythological figures were made as decorative objects, particu- larly clocks. Prices for quality pieces are high, and as this style became scarcer, they are sure to go higher. The upward trend has already begun. If there is little French Empire furniture to he found, there are several reasons for this. One is, of course, that there was considerable less of it than the earlier Louis XV and XXI styles that prevailed for decades. Also, there has never been an abundance imported to his country, because examples already here were slow to sell. Americans have never really liked the Empire style until recently, when all 19th century antiques started to look interesting. New design motifs directly attributed to Napoleon were added to the many classical ones the bee and the letter N. Two designers, totally responsible for complete interiors in the classical style that epitomized the Empire, were Pierre Fontaine, 1762- 1853, and Charles Percier, 1764-1838. The careers of many ebenistes ended with the Revolution, although some continued to produce furniture- without attracting any great attention to themselves- in order to make a living. Others adapted readily to the ideas of the new order, but this occurred only in Paris. The most prominent among these cabinetmakers was the Jacob family. At their factory, they continued to use the identifying stamps that have been a great boon to present-day collectors. Rich collectors I might add, for this period furniture, runs into the thousands of dollars. The French Empire was Napoleon's own personal style. ::J.:;;;. ;....;.:.:..'.;.;. ;..'.:.;.: ..'..*.:..*.M.N:..; .....,.....,...,.; ;..; .;;;;.....;.:.. ;;...,.., .... ,:......;.:.." :3. '. Wednesday night the bass were biting and after catch- ing 11 large sand bass and one black bass we thought we were in for a good night. But the wind blew up all of a sudden and the white caps chased us off the lake. Thursday night we were out there again and caught 8 sandies before the wind sent us racing for shore. Friends report that catfish are biting good at night, and everyone's been catching sand bass all over the lake, especially in the early even- ing in the deeper water. The biggest topic of conver- sation is the 2 3/4 lb. crappie landed by Bobble Green re- cently. Sure would like to know where to find some of his relatives.
