Jim Haynie, Immediate past
president of the American Radio
Relay League, will be the featured
speaker at the upcoming meeting
of the Cedar Creek Amateur Ra-
dio Club. He is an expert on emer-
gency communications and ama-
teur (ham) radio.
He will speak at the August
12th meeting of the Cedar
Creek Amateur Radio Club at
McClain's restaurant in Seven
Points. The gathering is open
to the public and is free.
Haynie will talk about the
valued roll of communications
for Homeland SecUrity. He
personally has been irivolved in
disaster communications for
plane crashes, tornadoes, wild-
fires and earthquakes. He'll
also talk about the effort to bring
high-speed Internet over
power-lines, new FCC rules
and a wide-range of technology
issues. His talk is intended for
the public and w'tll not be a teeh-
nical only talk.
His organization represents
over 300,000 members who
carry portable communications
gear and stand ready to fill the
void when telephone, Intemet
and cell phone services fail dur-
ing disasters. Those failures
happen very frequently in the
chaos that follows disasters
September 11,2001 proved that
when EVERY means of com-
munications was down, ham
radio was unaffected and could
step in and provide help.
Locally, the thirty-year-old
Cedar Creek Amateur Radio
Club maintains two repeater or
relay systems that can operate
even with the loss of power.
Communications here are also
aided by local, live color radar.
provided by the club to help in
times of severe weather.
Talking all over the world
while driving down the street is
an experience only ham radio
operators can enjoy.
Jim Haynie's big passion is get-
ring young people involved with
technology. So if.you have a child
or grandchild that you would like
exposed to a positive, character-
building hobby, then join us.
The Cedar Creek Amateur
Radio Club meets the second
Saturday of each month at 10
a.m at McClain's Restaurant.
Many guests and members
come earlier and buy breakfast
before the meeting.
See a world-class speaker,
make new friends and have a
great time. See you at 10:00 AM
on Saturday August 12.
McClain's Restaurant is located
at the Northeast comer of Hwys
334 and 274 m Seven Points.
Our September meeting will
feature a meteorologist to help
anyone learn how to spot severe
weather. Don't miss that meet-
ing ither! For more information

East Texas Genealogical So-
ciepj will hold it regular monthly
meeting on Saturday, August
12, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Tyler
Public Library in the Taylor Au-
ditorium featuring Paula
Perkins. Paula will present a
program called "Hear Ye ! Hear
Ye! Finding Your Newsworthy
(& not so newsworthy) Ances-
tors Through Newspaper Re-
search."
Looking for birth, death, mar-
riage, divorce, shipping lists,
train routes, murder & may-
hem? Secular and denomina-
tional newspapers have been
microfilmed from across the
United States and available
through interlibrary loan and
many have been digitalized.
State and Local newspapers
are archiving and digitalizing
their newspapers and have
searchable indexes to their da-
tabases online. These include
wedding announcements, birth,
obits, anniversary milestones of
ministers and the list goes on.
Both printed and online indexes
will help guide you to newspa-
pers and locations of where the
newspaper can be found. Come
find how to locate newspapers
around the country locally to as-
sist you in your genealogical pur-
suits of putting the pieces of the
puzzle together.
Paula is a native Texan with
over 25 years of genealogical
experience in research, speak-
ing and teaching on the subject
of family history. Her grand-
mother and parents assisted in
promoting her interest in gene
alogy when she wasa child by
taking her to visit all the "older"
members of the family. In ad-
dition her maternal "Granny",
that lived just shy of 100 years
old, was the family historian for
her family and her husband's
family. She collected a large
amount of material on the fam-
ily and educated Paula on all of
branches of the "family tree."
Paula has been the guest
speaker/instructor at universi-
ties, spoken to genealogical and
histqrical groups in several
states and served on the board
for several local genealogical
societies. Paula was the Dallas
PBS television station's Coor-
dinator for the Family History
Community Outreach program
