communlUes acros Texas boomed into
the 19S0s by more tban doubling and
tr/plLqg their populations.
Although the names of Tool,
Pyote
and West Mountain may not be as
widely associated with rapid growth as
Houston or Dallas, those and other
small cities became genuine boom-
towns during the last decade.
According to a report published by
the Texas Department of Community
Affairs, I0 rural commuulties were
among the 72 incorporated cities that
experienced more than 100 percent
growth during the 1970s, with Gun
Barrel City in Henderson County
among the top 1O cities that bad the
h/ghest percentage growth. Gun Barrel
City grew from 327 residents in 1970 to
2,118 in 1980, a 547.7 percent increase.
Three other Henderson County
communities - Tool, Seven Points and
Caney City - also were among the I0
" cities I/sted in the TDCA report, with
' Tool growing by 516.7 percent, Seven
Points by 247.8 percent and Caney City
by 166.7 percent.
Other "miniature boomtowns" - as
= referred to by TDCA - include Ed-
monson in Hale County, 193.9 percent
growth; Beach City in Chambers
i County, 169.1 percent growth; Pyote in
Ward County, 146.5 percent growth;
Reno in Lamar County, 117.5 percent
growth; Early in Brown County, 110.8
percent growth; and West Mountain in
Upshur County, 103.6 percent growth.
Edmonson, with only 99 residents as
of the 1970 censns, was the smallest of
those communities. It increased to a
population of 291. On the other band,
Early was the largest of the 10 with
1,037 residents in 1970. Its population
now stands at 2,313.
Beth Allen, who prepared the TDCA
report, says the story of these 10
boomtowns are much the same - all are
relatively close to larger cities, but
offer the advantages of rural life out-
side the metropolitan area.
In the case of the Henderson County
communities, all four are located on the
shores of Cedar Creek Reservoir. The
residents of those communities ap-
parentiy are willing to drive some 50
miles to Dallas for work daffy in order
to take advantage of the recreational
activities offered by the reservoir,
Allen says.
Local officials there report that about
20 percent of the new residents are
employed in Dallas and are near
retirement age.
Beach City has the advantage of
being within easy driving distance of
the Houston, Galveston and Beaumont-
Port Arthas metropolitan areas, while
cities such as Early, Reno and West
Mountain - which have no large urban
areas nearby - can offer low tax rates,
competitite housing costs "and a
"country lifestyle."
