Malachi 3:3 KJV How is the quality of your worship experience? What is it based on? How pleasing is it to the Lord? When we ob- serve what we call our wor- ship services each Sunday morning, we are faced with these questions. There are many reasons why people gather together on Sunday for these services. Many times we are there for all the wrong reasons. Too often we mistakenly assume that the nicer and more impressive the building or the better the parking facilities or the pret- tier and more loving the nurs- ery or the more comfortable the pews or the better the music or the more eloquent the preaching, the more wor- shipful the experience will be. All of these things may enhance our coming to church on Sunday, may cause our visit to be more enjoyable, may encourage us to make a more generous offering than Church of Christ ° Mabank " - Fifth St. & Mt: Vernon • 887-0311 Church of Christ • Eustace 316 W. The quality of our worship is not based on our activities, our pleasures, nor on how our physical needs are met but the quality of our worship is based on our character. Genuine worship originates from within our hearts. With- out a healthy, honest, and right relationship with God, all those things mentioned above are nothing more than reli- gious pageantry. Worship was not invented in our lifetime but it all began with God as He was leading Abraham to a land that would become the Promised Land. During the Exodus He began to estab- lish how He expected wor- ship to take place. God chose the tribe of Levi as the worship leaders of their day. Their task was to offer sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. How- ever, God declared that be- fore they, the Levites, could worship Him in righteous- ness, He would first refine them as a refiner's fire (Malachi 3:3). In doing this, He would purse them of any impurities. This was neces- sary since He is a Holy God and those that worship Him must flt of'all: purged of their sins. This i done now as it was in the Old Testa- ment through prayers of con- fession and repentance. Note in this brief verse that God is to worship in righteousness. Just because some man was a member of the tribe of Levi, having an official responsibil- ity in the temple, and going through the ritual of worship, did not guarantee that their religious activities would be acceptable to a Holy God. God told them that He would purge them or purify them as silver and gold was purified; and then they would be able to make an offering or wor- ship in righteousness to a Holy God. Today, we look to external things to enhance our wor- ship. However, true quality of worship begins and rest within us. If we have not al- lowed God to purify us through confession, repen- tance, and obedience to His Word, our worship will be void of His presence. We must have a pure heart in or- der for our offerings to be ac- ceptable to God. Our offer- ings include first the surren- der of ourselves to His will not only on Sunday but on each day of the week if we are truly a disciple of His. Just because you attend a reli- gious service will not auto- matically ensure you that you had an encounter with the liv- ing Lord, How satisfied are you with your quality of your worship? If you are not, do not start by blaming your environment. Take a close look at your heart. Ask God to refine your heart until it is pleasing to Him. Seek His face by allow- ing Him to forgive you of all of your sins. Make repen- tance a real and major issue in your life; give evidence to Him and to the Christian com- munity that you are serious about having and expecting a genuine worship experience with the Lord. You will not only find the freedom of wor- ship that you desire but you will be able to worship the Lord as He intended. Convenient Drive-Thru Same Day Service Available 310 W.
