" "'""""" """'"""''::"2""" """"" "" ......... 4 See 'n' Tell By Lois Williams I suppose it's perfectly obvious to anyone who has known me awhile that my favorite playthings are words. I love crossword puzzles, anagrams, scrabble and "Picturesque Speech" in Readers Digest. Some people collect matchbooks, stamps, small statues or bottle tops, but I've got several note books that contain a collection of clever advertising slogans that I've compiled over the past twen- ty years or so. Browsing through my dog-earred treasure reveals such adver- tising word-gems as: A face lotion-"Don't let your face tell time"; A florist shop- "We have every blooming thing"; Swim suits-"Pool- proof and see-worthy"; A rust inhibitor-"No rust for the wary"; Hosiery-' 'For contented calves"; Shoe polish-"The sure shine of success"; Sausage-"Made from pleased pigs who made perfect hogs of themselves"; and a restaurant-"While there's a steer left in Texas, you'll find the best part of him here". The most recent additions were collected on a recent vacation trip. We passed a delivery service van with "Our business is picking up" painted on it's sides and roadside billboards called a pick up truck a "Male Chauvinist Rig" I found some fellow slogan lovers right here in our own area last week. When I saw their advertisement that read, "Furniture with Exper- knevf had found They are Ometa Minor of Baywood Estates in Payne Springs. They recently opened their used furniture shop in the building located between the Food Fare Center and Dardens Truck Center on highway 274 in ven Points. When I inspected the premises I found a choice selection of used furniture that has been loved and well cared for, There are no junky relics falling apart at the joints and needing a major over- haul to be useful. The Minors said they are very choosy when they attend auctions looking for stock for their new store and their selectivity is obvious. At the present time they are open for business Wednes- SPORTSWEAR day through Saturday. Another new addition to business community is Rose- mary Johnson's neat Gift Boutique in the B&J Center in Seven Points. She and her husband are former Dallas- ites who retired to the lake area about two years ago and are now Gun Barrel City residents in the Sandy Shores addition. However, Rosemary said she had always wanted to own her own little shop and at last her dream has come true. " Open A Convenient REVOLV-A-CHARGE I or ! The Cooking C00)rner Help! writes a dieting reader. "My 'Weight Watchers' diet says I must have fish five time a week. Have you got any GOOD recipes for the kind of frozen fish that we get around here? The only way I like the local fresh fish is fried and that's got tmo many calories. And please don't suggest any shrimp or crab recipes. I've got enough of those and besides I can only eat shellfish once a week. Which is fine because who could afford it any oftener." I might suggest broiling perch or catfish, but I'm not too fond of that as a steady diet myself. Do any of our readers have some low calorie recipes for fish that are interesting and taste good? If so, send them to me c/o this newspaper and help our dieting friends. Here's one good recipe for frozen fish fillets that uses flounder, halibut, or any other firm melted fish. Part Three American Indian tribes of Virginia and Tennessee har- vested pearls and drilled them with copper wire of flint. Of course pearls found up and down the Mississippi are fresh water pearls, which differ somewhat from salt water pearls. Cremated dead of the mound builders are found wearing mother-of- pearl necklaces. These were generally worn five at a time, containing 33 beads of nicely shaped material which were sometimes as large as 20ram in diameter. Some 60,000 crumbling pearl relics were found near buried tribal leaders in the little Miami Valley. Mounds in other area have yielded pearl studded bear's teeth. Pearls are also found among relics of ancient Indians in Peru and Mexico. Columbus was thrown in chains for failing to report the pearl fisheries at Mar- garita. Charges brought against him claimed he was seeking to claim the fisheries for himself. It took some doing and a lot of time to persuade the crown his in- tentions had been pure. Place in blender; add enough water to cover. Chop, watching carefully [you don't want them to be all mushy]. Drain thoroughly. If you don't have a blender, shred the carrots with a shredder, and chop the onions and celery very finely by hand. Spread vegetables on fish; season with salt. Sprinkle with lemon juice. Canned salmon can be used as one of your five fish meals a week. Admittedly it's expensive, but not as costly as shrimp or crab. When you're in a creative mood, try the following recipe. SALMON SOUFFLE 6 eggs' V2 cup condensed skim milk 1 t. Worcestershire sauce dash Tabasco 1 t. anchovy paste [leave it out if you don't like ancho- vies. It doesn't make that much difference. On the other hand, if you like anchovies, it makes all the difference in the world.] salt and pepper to taste 1 8-ounce can salmon, drained 1 tablespoon corn or safflow- er oil Preheat oven to 375. Oil a 5-cup souffle dish with the corn or safflower oil. Put all the remaining ingredients in your electric blender and blend until the batter is smooth. [That's right, you don't have to separate the eggs or mess around with laking a white sauce, etc.] If your canned salmon has the skin and bones still in it, be sure to remove this before adding to the blender. Put the batter into the buttered dish and place in hot oven. Cook between 40 to 50 minutes.
