Thompson said the police whlcli use lignite coal as fuel. department's expenses are running $16,200 thus far this For many years, readily available and inexpensive natural gas was the only fuel used by Texas Power & Light Company at its generating plants. Recently, oil has been used during periods when supplies of natural gas were curtailed. Several years ago, TP&L and two other North Texas electric companies began a massive program to reduce their dependency on gas and oil by constructing plants which usJignite coal. The first lignite-fueled plant began producing electricity in 1971, another was placed in operation in 1974 and six more lignite units are scheduled for completion by 1980. Lignite-fueled plants cost much more to build than gas-fueled plants. However, because lignite itself is more economical, it's helping and will help in the future to keep the price of electricity lower than it would be if we depended solely on gas and oil as generating plant fuels. At Texas Power & Light, we will continue doing what must be done to assure you a dependable supply of electricity in the years ahead.
